The East County Fire Protection
District along with The Pine Valley Protection District has been awarded
a Regionalized EMS Communication and Rescue Equipment grant
funded by The Office of Traffic Safety.
East County Fire Protection
District responded to more than 460 vehicle collisions during
2005. This figure includes auto aid response into the
Lakeside, Alpine and El Cajon. East County Fire Protection
District has been awarded funds to purchase new air bags, a
fully equipped extraction system that includes a hydraulic
spreader/cutter and a hydraulic power unit, rams, hydraulic
hoses, ram attachment and extension sets, cutters and mini
spreaders.
The San Diego Rural Fire
Protection District and San Diego CDF are collaborating on an
effort to provide a better level of service. The Fire District
is 720 square miles with 2 major freeways that run through it
being Interstate 8 and State Hwy 94. Annually the
collaborative run approximately 550 motor vehicle related
incidents. The incidents range in severity from minor injury,
vehicles with trapped victims, to vehicles over the side into
canyons. Average daily trips according to SANDAG in this
service area are 32.7K. This is a cumulative total for
Interstate 8 (16.5K, and Hwy 94 (16.2K). It is believed that
the North American Free Trade Agreement has and will continue
to increase these average daily trip numbers. |

The entire jurisdictional areas of
the collaborative are included, which contain additional
extensive roadway systems. During the period 2002-2004 the
collaborative experienced a 75% increase in motor vehicle
incidents. We are also seeing similar increases in traumatic
injuries from vehicle accidents for these same areas. San
Diego Rural has been awarded funds to purchase new rescue
struts, communication radios and fully equipped medical bags.
The Pine Valley Fire Protection
District’s response static’s for the last three years show
that approximately 35% of our call volume is to vehicle
accidents on the freeways in all weather conditions. Given the
high speeds of freeway traffic and the nature of secondary
backcountry roads, “working” vehicle rescues where traffic
control along with the use of rescue tools make up a large
portion of our emergency workload. The Pine Valley Fire
Protection District has been awarded funds to purchase a new
rescue vehicle and a fully equipped extraction system with
hydraulic spreader/cutter and a hydraulic power unit, rams,
hydraulic hoses, ram attachment and extension sets, cutters
and mini spreaders.
