PHYSICAL ABILITIES
EXAMINATION
The following is specific information
concerning the physical agility exam. This is a series of six exercises designed
to measure stamina, coordination, and relative body strength. These exercises
have been developed to simulate tasks that are normal activities performed in
firefighter duties. The test consists of the following six tasks:
TASK 1 - HOSE STACK
Applicant will be required to pick up six rolls of 2 ½ inch fire hose,
one at a time, from a designated box; place each roll on a hose rack ten feet
away. After all six rolls are on the rack, remove each one and place back in the
starting box. Applicant will then step across the star/finish line. Time
allotted for this event is 1 minute and 15 seconds.
TASK 2 - VENTILATION EVENT
Applicant will step up on ventilation prop with 8 lb. Sledgehammer.
He/She will be required to hit a designated spot 30 times. The head of the
sledgehammer must be raised over applicants’ head and his/her hand must not pass
the mid point of the handle each time. Time allotted for this event is 25
seconds.
TASK 3 - HOSE DRAG/COMBO
Applicant will be required to carry a 1 ¾ inch fire hose bundle 150 feet
to a specified point: drop the hose bundle and return to the start/finish line.
He/She will then pick up the end of the 150 foot of 2 ½ inch fire hose and drag
it to the specified point; drop the end being carried.
Then once again pick up the 1 ¾
inch fire hose bundle and carry it back to the starting point. Applicant will
then pull the outstretched 2 ½ inch fire hose; hand over hand across the
start/finish line. Time allotted for this event is 3 minutes and 30
seconds.
TASK 4 -
DUMMY DRAG
Applicant will be required to drag a rescue dummy, weighing
approximately 160 - 180 lbs., to a designated point 50 feet away. Time
allotted for this event is 25 seconds.
TASK 5 -
LADDER RAISE
Applicant will be required to fully extend the fly section of a 24-foot
extension ladder and then retract it while standing in a marked box. The method
used to raise and lower will be hand over hand. Time allotted for this
event is 15 seconds.
TASK 6 -
HYDRANT HOOK-UP
Applicant will be required to stand at the start/finish line then
proceed to a hydrant and remove the caps from both 2 ½ inch ports and one 4-inch
port. He/She will then pick up a coupling from its marked box and match it to
its appropriate port. At this point, applicant will proceed to thread and hand
tighten each coupling. Time stops when the applicant steps over the start/finish
line. Time allotted for this event is 1 minute and 25 seconds.
All candidates will wear helmet, gloves, and
turnout jacket for all portions of this test.
The examination is Pass or Fail, and
all portions of the examination must be successfully completed before a
candidate may be allowed to continue in the testing process.
Any discrepancies in the testing
process will be brought to the attention of the ranking officer after the entire
test has been completed, NOT during the test! At that time a decision will be
made as to the validity of the complaint.
At the end of the test you will be
advised of your results and the next steps in the process.
If you fail one event of the test,
you will not be allowed to continue.
If at any time you feel sick or
light-headed, STOP IMMEDIATELY and
tell the proctor.
GOOD LUCK!
