Smoke Detectors Required

Uniform Building Code mandates the installation of smoke detectors in all buildings where a room or area is designated for sleeping purposes.  N.F.P.A. recommends that you install smoke detectors outside each bedroom.  One on each level of your home, and in the basement.

Regular Maintenance and Testing of smoke detectors is essential for life safety.  These devices are expected to operate perfectly although needed only occasionally.  Owners should conduct maintenance procedures outlines in the owner's manual enclosed with each detector.  The East County Fire Protection District recommends testing your smoke detector monthly.  N.F.P.A. recommends you replace the batteries twice a year at the daylight-savings time change.

Cleaning is especially important.  Dirt can "confuse" the detector and lead to false alarm or cause the detector to malfunction.  Vacuuming and dusting the detector, along with periodic tests, will reduce the chances of false alarm of malfunctions.
